The bean cleaner removes foreign material such as dust, small stones, and twigs (inadvertently scooped up along with the beans following sun-drying) from the cacao beans before they are roasted. Inside the machine, the beans are shaken on screens and passed beneath streams of suctioned air.

Heavier objects like stones fall to the bottom of a pit, while dust, broken shells, and other objects that are lighter than the beans are lifted by what can be thought of as a sort of vacuum cleaner built into the machine. The beans emerge from the bean cleaner on a conveyor belt and fall into barrels marked by bean origin before being taken into the roasting room.
